The 2020 edition of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Supra GT Cup Asia – Philippines e-sports racing series sees its first champion as 16-year old karting ace Russel Cabrera of Toyota Team Cebu – Vios Cup Racing Team takes the overall win in round 1 of the Junior Class of the inaugural online racing event.
Eight young drivers qualified for the first round finals event shown on Sunday, July 26 at the Facebook page of Toyota Motor Philippines. In a thrilling chase with 15-year old champion race car driver Inigo Anton, the young karter was running a close second when Anton overshot the exit of Degner 2 curve at the famed Suzuka Circuit on lap 2 of the 6-lap final race. Cabrera easily took over the lead and never looked back as he built a commanding 3-second buffer to Anton by the time the checkered flag dropped.
“I feel very fortunate to have won the first round of the Supra GT Cup Asia Philippines considering that Inigo and a lot of the other drivers are very fast. But I think luck was also on my side,” shared the Junior Class first round champion. Picking up from this victory, Cabrera aims to finish the remaining two rounds of the Supra GT Cup while looking forward to getting back to actual racing on the track.
Toyota GR Supra GT Cup Asia – Philippines series organizer, JP Tuason of TRS Racing, relishes the importance of this special category in the series for racers who are 17-years old and below. “These are the quick, up and coming young drivers and it is important to develop this class because these are going to be the e-sports drivers of the future,” says Tuason.
