Audi’s Q5 has always been a leader in the premium mid-size SUV segment, thanks to modern design, handsome interior, refined yet responsive driving dynamics and comfortably luxurious interior, mated to impressive turbocharged diesel and gasoline engines.
For 2020, the Audi Q5 has benefited from upgrades which resulted in top ratings by leading vehicle safety groups in America and Europe. The latest Q5 line-up has been rationalized in two special variants that each present equipment levels and value unmatched in its class. Called the Audi Q5 Prestige and Audi Q5 Premium, both are fitted with powerful but efficient TDI diesel engines with Le Mans winning pedigree, the brand’s signature Quattro all-wheel drive for surefooted traction and their Le Mans conquering ultra-technology (Audi-speak for their lightweight and efficiency architecture technology). The latest Q5 also boasts of the latest infotainment and assistance systems that improves the driver’s comfort, convenience and safety.
The range-topping Audi Q5 Prestige boasts of adaptive air suspension, unique in this segment. It works in conjunction with the Q5’s newly developed five-link rear end with damper control to allow for settings ranging between Comfort and Dynamic. Five unique damper settings are available, accessed via the Audi Drive Select menu. Ride height also adjust accordingly depending on the mode selected. The result is a perfect balance between comfort and control, even when loaded with five people and matching cargo.
Inside is Audi’s highly touted and very intuitive Audi MMI Multi-Media Infotainment touch system. MMI touch has an 8.3-inch LCD display and integrates a touchpad into its rotary/push-button control, allowing it to recognize handwritten entries and gestures for operating synced mobile devices. The system easily pairs with both Apple and Android smartphones to allow for hands-free calls, music streaming from sites like Spotify, or using navigation apps like Waze.
Complementing MMI touch is the fully digital Audi Virtual Cockpit in lieu of the traditional mechanical instrument cluster. The feature uses brilliant graphics on a high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen to display various information relevant to the driver. The driver has the option to customise the information displayed on the screen to suit his or her preferences.
Other premium features include handsome 20-inch Audi Sport light alloy wheels, electronically adjustable leather comfort seats and a powerful Bang & Olufsen 3D surround-sound audio system to bring your music truly alive inside the Q5. Ambient LED lighting illuminates the vehicle’s interior with a choice of 30 colors to match and complete your mood. A distinctive aluminium strip frames the upper zone of the dashboard, running across the full width of the instrument panel to reinforce the feeling of generous space, and provides a sophisticated contrast to the somber interior.
The Audi Q5 Premium on the other hand offers the best value in its class as it shares many of the top-variant Audi Q5 Prestige’s equipment and specifications even if presented in a more affordable package. Key difference is that the Audi Q5 Premium sports 18-inch light alloy wheels with only subtle changes in exterior trim.
Whichever variant is chosen, the Audi Q5 Prestige and Audi Q5 Premium are powered by the same four-cylinder, turbocharged 2.0-liter TDI common rail direct injection with Le Mans winning pedigree, outputting a powerful 190hp and 400-NM of torque. Power is sent, depeding on conditions, to all four wheels via the 7-speed dual clutch S-Tronic transmission with Quattro all-wheel drive. To increase overall efficiency, at moderate speeds and no tire slip detected, the Q5 drives the front wheels exclusively. If tire slip is detected, the system seamlessly and automatically switches to all-wheel drive to deliver more stability and traction.
Making the Audi Q5 Prestige and Audi Q5 Premium look unmistakably Audi are their distinctive curves, strongly undercut shoulder line, distinctive LED headlights and the trademark Singleframe grille. Both vehicles have dynamic turn signals on their taillights.
The 2020 Audi Q5 was cited as “Top Safety Pick” by the U.S.A. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as it scored “Good” in six crashworthiness tests and a “Superior” rating in front crash prevention tests. The model also carries the maximum five-star rating from the European New Car Assessment Program, or Euro NCAP, for its excellent performance in occupant protection, child safety and pedestrian protection.
