Welcome to Inquirer Mobility

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) went to the main office of the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) intending to renew his Philippine International Driving Permit (PIDP) because he was told that it was cheaper at the AAP offices. After checking AAP’s database, he soon found out that what he had been carrying in his work abroad was a fake that cost him P5,000. Luckily, he had not been caught with the fake PIDP or it might have subjected him to a fine costing much more than P5,000.

The AAP warns the public once again about fake PIDPs. Aside from websites and social media pages offering fast and easy processing of “international driver’s licenses,” there are fixers preying on unsuspecting OFWs who are just trying to complete their requirements before going abroad.

A fake PIDP can be spotted via the type of card it is printed on. Often, the fake PIDP feels like it is printed on mere cardboard. The edges of the card are uneven or not cut properly after lamination. Because the quality of the card is substandard, the printing on it is very dark and the color of the stamp is unlike the ones used on legitimate PIDPs.

AAP is the only organization in the country that is authorized to issue the PIDP.  The legitimate PIDP is a three-fold document that has the signature of the AAP president, AAP logo markings and a special seal. This seal distinguishes the legitimate PIDP from the fake.
The PIDP is not a stand-alone document or a substitute for the local driver’s license in the country you are in. You must carry your Philippine driver’s license with your PIDP at all times. The PIDP is recognized in over 150 counties, having been validated by the 1949 and 1968 UN Conventions on Road Traffic.

Penalties for carrying or using a fake PIDP abroad can range from a hefty fine, traffic violation citation with possible mandatory court appearance, and even jail time.
