Welcome to Inquirer Mobility

In a year when the automotive world grappled with all kinds of setbacks, Chery recently reached a milestone worth celebrating with the grandest of fireworks.

Chery announced that it already hit cumulative global vehicle sales of 9 million units as of Dec. 18, 2020, a feat it achieved after releasing its first production model—a 000001 Fulwin compact sedan— on exactly the same date 21 years ago.

But more than a numerical milestone, the feat demonstrates the staying power of the Anhui-based Chinese automaker. From the Fulwin, Chery now sells globally recognized vehicle brands such as the Tiggo, Arrizo, EXEED, Jetour and Cowin. The company has also established a dozen other auto companies as well as joint ventures like the Chery Jaguar Land Rover and Cowin Auto. In just over two decades, the Chery Group has created a series of brands that span a diverse range from entry level to the luxury market in the passenger vehicle segment.

A key model of Chery, the upmarket Tiggo 8 midsize 7-seater SUV has registered cumulative sales of nearly 300,000 units in over two years since its launch. It achieved record sales of over 20,000 units in November. Meanwhile, the Arrizo sedan is the first model developed according to Chery’s Global Forward Development process and has been recognized by domestic and overseas markets for its world-class quality and performance.

Chery’s Arrizo 5 was the only Chinese sedan ranked by the J.D. Power 2020 China Initial Quality Study (IQS).

As Chery’s premium brand, EXEED has successfully undergone an upward brand development. Under the Forward R&D system and with a global vision, EXEED aims to build an independent world atop the world-class M3X platform. Empowered by the M3X platform, the EXEED TXL achieved a 5-star plus C-NCAP rating with an overall score of 93.6 percent, ranking first among all midsize SUVs in evaluations since the new rules came into effect.

While serving the vast Chinese car market, its overseas sales is fast becoming an important sector for Chery. In 2020 marking the 20th year of Chery’s globalization, the number of Chery’s overseas customers exceeded 1.7 million and Chery, enabling it to become China’s largest passenger vehicle exporter for the 17th consecutive year.

First to go global

As China’s first auto brand to go global, Chery has implemented a 3-step strategy for globalization. Today Chery boasts 6 R&D bases, 10 manufacturing plants, as well as over 1,500 overseas dealers and service networks around the world. Chery’s overseas production capacity totals up to 200,000 units per year. Chery has exported auto products to over 80 countries and regions. In key markets like Russia and Egypt, Chery has bacome a household name.

At the 2020 Summit on Global Image of Chinese Enterprises in November, Chery was listed among 2020 Top 20 Chinese Enterprises with the Best Global Image, moving into the top 10 along with enterprises like Huawei, Lenovo and Alibaba. This is the fifth time that Chery has won this honor as well as leading China’s top auto industry list.
