Bentayga awarded Luxury SUV of the Year

Bentley’s Bentayga has been awarded by 4×4 Magazine as the Best Luxury SUV.

The award validates the Bentayga’s off-roading prowess and on-road high performance, despite its Saville Row-like couture tin suit and leather linings.

It was previously hailed as the Performance SUV of the Year by the same magazine and its editor Alan Kidd said: “Until this last year, we’ve always seen the Bentayga as a performance SUV. But its pace and dynamics have been so dominant in its character, it has been easy to overlook the luxury that’s a critical element of any Bentley.”

“That’s why the new Bentayga is so significant. It remains magnificent to drive, with a masterful lightness of touch on the road – but now this is matched by an interior whose seats, fascia and electronics have all been replaced by new items. The improvement is emphatic. We think the latest version of Bentley’s design language is far better suited to the Bentayga’s proportions, too. It now has the looks to go with its athleticism,” he added.

To prove its capabilities, it went through a gauntlet of challenges at Bentley’s “Toy Box” event last October, which included an on- and off-road test drives in new Bentaygas. These vehicles went through half a meter of water, traversing side slopes up to 35 degrees and challenging ascent and descent gradients which were all tackled with ease by the Bentayga’s intelligent off-road systems.

It takes about 130 hours to build a Bentayga, by the brand’s crew of artisans and highly skilled mechanics. With the new exterior, it adopts the Bentley design DNA which is now prevalent across the entire model range. This remarkable SUV is the ultimate expression of power, luxury and usability.

Bentley’s Member of the Board for Sales and Marketing, Chris Craft said: “The Bentayga has been the definition of the luxury performance SUV ever since we first launched it five years ago. I’m delighted that 4×4 magazine has conferred this award, recognizing the handcrafted luxury inherent to every Bentayga after having previously commended the car’s performance. That combination of these two seemingly immiscible attributes is what makes every Bentley special, and with the Bentayga we then add every-day practicality, the latest onboard technology and all-terrain usability. It really is the ultimate go-anywhere, do-anything car.”

Bentley also had a stellar year, announcing a new record in total sales, despite a 7-week shutdown and 50% reduction in output for the following 9 weeks because of the pandemic. It inched 2% higher than previous year’s sale, with China rocketing 48% in sales growth. The Bentayga accounted for 37% of the brand’s total sales, outpacing all the other models in the line up.
