Sporty Seven: Mercedes-Benz GLB is a stylish, practical 7-seat compact SUV

Mercedes-Benz has been a pioneer in the SUV class decades before these vehicles were even known as such. From one timeless offroader model, the G-Class, and one midsize popular vehicle, the M-Class, the Mercedes-Benz range of SUVs has expanded to all sizes and different levels of luxury.
One of the more interesting models to come from Mercedes is the GLB-Class SUV. The GLB is a versatile model with the classic styling of a Mercedes offroader, with the practicality and utility of a family wagon. Within the compact 4,634mm length x 2,020 mm width are three rows of seats to accommodate seven occupants. The long 2,829mm wheelbase and fore-and-aft adjustable second-row seats deliver a versatile interior space. The third and second-row seats can split-fold to provide more room for cargo and sports equipment when needed.
The GLB is powered by a 1.3-liter inline-four gasoline engine. Thanks to turbocharging, there’s adequate power at 165ps, and 250Nm from just 1620rpm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Dynamic Select allows the driver to switch from Eco to Comfort to Sport mode. The GLB 200 AMG Line accelerates to 100kph in 9.1 seconds, on to a 207kph top speed.

You probably won’t be in a rush to get to your destination, as the GLB is equipped with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) interface. MBUX responds to both touchscreen and voice commands, as it can understand natural-language commands. Just say “Hey Mercedes” to initiate the interface. There’s also a touchpad on the center console. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are on board, too, for easy connection with a smartphone. Even the analog-style gauges are rendered using a digital screen.
Convenience features abound, including keyless-go door access and engine start, active parking assist, reverse camera, and dual-zone climate control. The cabin is smartly trimmed with Mercedes’ Artico synthetic leather and Dinamica microfiber with red double topstitching. The driver’s seat is power-adjustable with memory functions for three. Carbon-design and matte chrome trim complete the sporty vibe.
As befits a Mercedes-Benz, the GLB comes with multiple active safety features. On board are active brake assist, ABS, adaptive brake lights, hill start assist, electronic stability program, and tire pressure monitoring system. Seven airbags help protect all of the car’s passengers.
The GLB features an attractive face with the Mercedes tri-star embedded within a chrome-pin grille, LED headlamps and taillights. There’s an available AMG package with 19-inch 5 twin-spoke alloy wheels, side skirts, aluminum roof rails, and AMG Body Styling.
The GLB 200 AMG Line is a sporty, capable compact SUV that boasts of Mercedes style and luxury, with a healthy helping of practicality with its seven-seat capacity. It starts at P3.89 million.
