Welcome to Inquirer Mobility

Few industry observers would have guessed that MG, a storied British sports car brand that is now building mainstream sedans and SUVs, would be one of the success stories in the Philippine automotive market. Yet succeed it did, with MG delivering a spot-on mix of value, features, and performance.

It doesn’t hurt that the cars look good, too, if somewhat derivative. Since its launch in 2018, MG has delivered more than 10,000 cars in the Philippines.

MG’s crossover ZS has been one of its popular models, even reportedly topping the B-size SUV segment. Understandably, MG is excited to unveil the 2022 ZS T. In time-honored performance fashion, the T stands for Turbo. The ZS T now packs a turbocharged three-cylinder engine. With 1.3 liters displacement, it delivers 162 ps and 230Nm, up a significant 42% and 53% from its predecessor’s naturally-aspirated engine. The torque in particular should help the ZS T zip more quickly around town and on highways. The transmission has been upgraded to a 6-speed automatic with manual shift mode.

The new MG ZS also looks markedly different from the outgoing model. The new styling embodies MG’s new global design language. The angular headlamps house LED units and LED daytime running lights. The grille has been revised to a smaller hexagonal opening. The grille, called Obsidian Matrix, and other ducting are done in black and integrate smoothly into the sport-style bumper. 17-inch alloy wheels dubbed “Tomahawk” enclose red brake calipers.

Pop open the door, and the MG ZS welcomes with soft-touch materials on almost all surfaces, including dashboard, steering wheel, door panels, and center console. MG opted for red stitching on the seats and cabin trim. The are also red embroidered MG monograms on the front headrests. MG promises low noise, vibration and harshness.

Instrument cluster

Some customers prefer a digital display panel, and MG obliges with its “Goggles” virtual instrument cluster. This complements the 10.1-inch non-reflective touchscreen HD infortainment system. The system connects via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Other comfort features include rear aircon vents and a USB port behind the rear view mirror, making dashcam installation neat and easy.

Safety features include rear cross-traffic assist, lane change assist, cornering lamps, cornering brake control, and vehicle dynamic control. One of the most appreciated safety features is the 360-degree monitor, especially useful when parking or maneuvering in tight spaces. The MG ZS T pairs that with a blind-spot information system to improve safety further.

The ZS T, like all of MG’s vehicles, is supported by the brand’s 5-year, 100,000km warranty and a 1-year free periodic maintenance service. MG owners can use the My MG mobile app to schedule service appointments or even book home service from a Mobile Garage caravan. There’s also 24/7 roadside assistance from MG HERO Services.

“When we launched the MG brand in 2018, our goal was clear: to be part of the exciting and growing Philippine automotive market, and to provide Filipinos with stylish, modern, and safe vehicles—but at very attainable price points,” says Atty. Alberto B. Arcilla, President and CEO of MG Philippines. “The local market’s reception has been very encouraging indeed. In just three years, more Filipinos have chosen MG, and there are now over ten thousand MG’s on our roads, with several of those being the ever-popular ZS Crossover SUV.”

The MG ZS T slots in as the top variant of this SUV model. The T then also stands for “Trophy,”  as the variant combines the highest power with new style, and more driver and safety assist features. Interestingly, the other MG ZS variants the Core, Style and Alpha will continue to be available.
The MG ZS T starts at P1,158,888.

The ZS T will be made available in all MG Philippines dealerships nationwide and will be available for reservations starting October 2021. Reservations and test drives may also be made online at BuyAnMG.com or https://www.mgmotor.com.ph/dealers
