Suzuki unveils new Swift hatchback

Jason K. Ang

Meet the new Suzuki Swift. If it looks much like the previous Swift, that’s no surprise, as the new model adds several upgrades to the already popular model to make it even more attractive and convenient to drive. An exterior facelift, improved infotainment system, reverse sensor and camera, and new colors are the main changes.

In case you need a refresher on the Suzuki Swift: it’s a subcompact hatchback clocking in at 3,840mm long x 1,735mm wide. It projects a sporty stance on the road, thanks particularly to its wheels-at-the-corners platform, and coupé-like styling incorporating hidden rear doors. The 2022 Swift gets a new front bumper grille featuring a “studded net” pattern and chrome garnish.

Inside, the Swift continues its sporty design ethos with a D-shaped steering wheel, bolstered front seats, and a center console that’s angled toward the driver. The entertainment system gets a timely upgrade with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The audio system likewise gets a larger screen, now 8 inches from the previous 7 inches, and soft-touch buttons.

With its compact dimensions, the Swift is easy to maneuver and park. The latter becomes even easier and safer thanks to standard reverse camera and reverse sensors. New colors for the Swift are: Ablaze Red Pearl, Speedy Blue Metallic, Pure White Pearl and Mineral Gray Metallic.

Powering the Swift is a 1.2-liter inline-four gasoline engine, good for 82hp and 113Nm of torque, suitable for the Swift’s curb weight of around 900kg. The engine is mated to a CVT, for optimum fuel efficiency. The new Swift GL CVT is priced at P844,000.

“The Swift is one of our products designed to be an everyday companion and a sure standout on the road,” Keiichi Suzuki, Vice President and General Manager for Automobile shared. “As standards rise, so should the level of our products and services. We are excited to release this improved version of the lovable Swift.”
