ACROSS THE HYUNDAI-VERSE

By Raphael C. Ang

Swinging into theaters this June is the latest Spider-Man animated adventure, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” Miles Morales and friends have their work cut out for them as more villains and challenges come their way.

With some acts of the film being set in the year 2099, it should come as no surprise that the vehicles involved possess various futuristic aspects. One of the vehicles featured in the film, the ‘Flying Prophecy,’ was based on a real-world concept car introduced in March 2020 called the ‘Prophecy.’ The concept served as grounds for the production model, the Ioniq 6. Hyundai’s unique take on the electric sedan would eventually go on to win various prestigious awards, with three World Car of the Year honors and a ‘Golf’ iF design award under its belt. Philippine car enthusiasts may recall the Hyundai Ioniq 6 being unveiled at the 2023 Manila International Auto Show.

Spider-Man will also rendezvous with some of Hyundai’s most innovative mobility concepts yet, with a fictional self-driving robotaxi based on the historic Hyundai Pony being among them. Back in the real world, Hyundai is envisioning a globally scalable driverless vehicle, which may launch this year in Las Vegas. Advanced air mobility (AAM), also known as a flying car, which may be introduced into cities to reduce traffic, as well as to save time and space. Purpose-built vehicles (PBV), which will be reconfigurable to suit your situation whether it be fighting crime or delivering pizza, both of which Spider-Man has been known to do. The AAM and the PBV are both key elements of Hyundai’s Hub concept, a space for urban mobility.

Devoted viewers will recall Hyundai’s involvement in Sony movies beginning in 2020, with equally popular films such as “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” with the Tucson SUV and the IONIQ 5 starring in one of the movies action set pieces, and “Uncharted,” with the Tucson Beast concept SUV also briefly making an appearance. The Tucson Beast is a heavily modified SUV featured in Uncharted.

Spider-Man fans can also enjoy the special exhibit at SM Megamall Fashion Hall mounted by Hyundai Motor Philippines until June 25. At the center will be the Ioniq 6 EV. Visitors may also test drive and claim a free sweet treat at the venue. The Ioniq 5, Hyundai’s flagship EV and 2022 World Car of The Year (WCOTY) winner, will be showcasing its Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) function by powering up the on-site ice cream bar and lounge. Customers who drop by and reserve a Hyundai Creta, Santa Fe, Stargazer or Tucson are entitled to a ten thousand (10,000) pesos voucher and a Hyundai-branded New Earth Washable Paper Bag Tote.
