HYUNDAI AND SM PARTNER FOR MORE EV CHARGING STATIONS

The multi-award-winning Hyundai and the mammoth and forward-thinking SM Group announced their partnership this week, as part of their plan to bring Electric Vehicle (EV) accessibility to more people all over the country.

Inside the parking area of SM Mall of Asia and in front of two World Car Of The Year awardees: Hyundai full electric vehicles, the executives of both groups began the charging of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 in a way that will be available for any brand of electric vehicle to charge.

The new facility was inaugurated by HMPH President Dongwook “Eric” Lee; SM Engineering Design & Development Corp. President, Hans Sy Jr.; Shopping Center Management Corporation President, Steven Tan; HMPH Managing Director, Cecil Capacete and SM Senior Vice President for Operations, Bien Mateo.

In line with Hyundai’s global vision of “Progress for Humanity,” Lee said that they have to be more proactive when responding to climate change compared to companies in other industries, thus the need to “look after and uplift both people and planet.”

The establishment of EV dealers, he said, is the start of this journey with five now being operational.

“Ioniq changes the paradigm of electric vehicles customer experiences accommodating diverse lifestyles without constraints. Also, Integrated Modular Architecture will be used on 13 new dedicated EV models being developed by Hyundai Motor Group,” he said.

Lee added they will strengthen the value chain of EV batteries and continue working with partners to fast-track the development of the EV charging station network.

“Although locally, we have barely touched the surface, we are grateful that we have the opportunity to work with like-minded corporations like SM. This valuable relationship strengthens and helps realize our mission as a mobility solutions provider.”

Meanwhile, being aligned with a company like SM Megamalls whose approach to sustainability is as holistic as theirs, Capacete believes that they are ready to support society’s transition and adoption of cleaner mobility solutions.

This SM MOA facility is the first of currently planned six others, all of which will be available to mall goers for free, regardless of the brand. And speaking with the SM group about the fact that as more EVs are sold, there may be increased demand, their response was quick. They can very easily add more charging stations.

As soon as the inaugural event finished, another EV from a different brand came in and started charging. Clearly, they are seeing demand.

The cars shown being charged are the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Hyundai Ioniq 6, both multi- award-winning vehicles in different years for the World Car of The Year Awards announced every year in New York. The Ioniq 5 won three awards in 2022, the overall World Car Of The Year Award, The World Electric Vehicle Award, and the World Car Design Award.

The newer Ioniq 6 also took three top awards in 2023, the overall World Car Of The Year Award, The World Electric Vehicle Award, and The World Car Design Award.
