And just like that, BYD is poised to be the number one EV maker in the world in 2023. What a phenomenal feat considering that the number one EV maker in the world, Tesla had a five- year head start from BYD in the manufacturing of EVs that began in 2003.

To understand this phenomenal feat by BYD, you should know about the humble beginnings of BYD. BYD was founded in 1995 by a Chinese chemist Wang Chuanfu. Chuanfu’s vision was to make BYD as a world leader in the supply of rechargeable batteries for mobile phones, that has been dominated by Japanese battery manufacturers. By producing affordable and reliable cellphone batteries, BYD has become the number one battery maker in the world displacing Japanese battery makers.

The dominance of BYD in the supply of rechargeable batteries for mobile phones eventually caught the eye of the “Oracle of Omaha,” Warren Buffet, who saw the potential of BYD as a global company as early as 2008. BYD henceforth played a key role in the manufacturing of electric vehicles.

Today, Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway roughly owns 9% of BYD and the rest is history.

When BYD threw its hat into the EV manufacturing space in 2013, it knew that the battery would play a key role in the success or failure of an EV manufacturing company. Leveraging on its battery manufacturing experience since 1995, BYD had what it takes to compete with Tesla head on. Today, its job is almost complete due to its dominance in battery technology that other EV manufacturers do not have.

Why do batteries play an important role in EV manufacturing? Well, the EV battery is the most important part of an EV. Aside from the fact that it’s the most expensive part of an electric vehicle, an electric vehicle cannot operate efficiently without a reliable, durable, and safe electric battery. Battery technology will play an important role in the success or failure of any EV manufacturer.

It is the be all and the end all, of electric vehicles. While today’s EV batteries have met reliability and durability standards, how many can claim that their batteries are safe? Electric vehicles involved in catastrophic collision incidents result in their lithium-ion batteries exploding and catching fire. And when lithium-ion batteries catch fire, it is very hard to put out.

When BYD started manufacturing EVs in 2013, it knew that its vast experience in battery technology will play an important role in becoming the number one EV manufacturer in the world. While almost all EV battery manufacturers can claim that their batteries are reliable and durable, the claim of a truly safe battery is nowhere in sight.

The enemy of a lithium-ion battery is heat. Exposure to heat degrades the battery and affects its performance. Continuous exposure to high heat will eventually result in the batteries catching fire and endangering the lives of passengers.

Safety is the top priority of BYD. And the issue of safety has been successfully addressed by BYD’s proprietary Blade Battery Technology- a game changer in the EV industry. In layman’s terms, the Blade Battery Technology prevents the thermal runaway of the lithium-ion phosphate batteries under extreme heat brought about by a catastrophic collision. Using the needle penetration test, an ordinary lithium-ion battery will catch fire and explode after being impaled by a needle to simulate an internal short circuit situation.

The Blade Battery Technology of BYD passes this extreme test with flying colors. No wonder, major EV makers like Tesla, Mercedes Benz, and even Toyota have started to source their EV batteries from BYD. Is this not the best endorsement for BYD as a battery and as an EV manufacturer?

But wait, there is more! Aside from the fact that BYD produces rechargeable batteries for mobile phones and electric vehicles, BYD also produces mobile phone and laptop metal casings for major brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and even Samsung. It supplies various electronic parts that power laptops, cellphones, computers, and home appliances that make our lives comfortable. We might not know it, but BYD has been part of our lives all these years. Look at the smartphones we have right now. They are light, powerful, and have an extended battery life that could last for days without charging. Thanks to BYD battery technology, communication has never been this easy.

If you are impressed by BYD now, let me impress you further. When COVID-19 became a global pandemic in 2019, BYD morphed into the world’s largest face mask supplier. They re-tooled their manufacturing facilities and within 1 week, started producing 5 million face masks per day! I have never seen a company transform itself that quick, to answer the call of the global community for the urgent supply of face masks in combating the spread of COVID-19.

From rechargeable batteries, electronics, face masks, and electric vehicles, BYD has touched our lives one way or another.

Indeed, BYD is the gift of China to the world!
