The local government of Manila successfully launched ‘Move Manila: Car-free Sundays by the Bay’ yesterday morning.
Part of Roxas Boulevard was closed from vehicles to give way to people who want to exercise along a bigger space, free from the hazards of passing vehicles.
Here, despite the gloomy weather, the community Zumba activity kicked off past 5:30 a.m after a short delay due to the rains.
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna arrived shortly after, leading the grand launch of the “car-free” initiative.
Together with her was Vice Mayor Yul Servo Nieto, who also joined in the short Zumba session.
Runners, cyclists and other exercise enthusiasts then filled up the streets to maximize their limited time along the boulevard.
Under this program, the stretch of Roxas Boulevard from Padre Burgos to Quirino Avenue will be closed to all vehicles from 5 to 9 a.m. every Sunday.
According to Mayor Lacuna, they’re aspiring to bring back the habit of their residents of exercising along Roxas Boulevard as one of their priorities for the city is the health and wellness of its constituents.
